Classic Video: Fleetwood Mac – Gold Dust Woman

(Warner Bros. Records) “Gold Dust Woman,” written and sung by Stevie Nicks, is the final song on Fleetwood Mac’s incredibly successful 1977 album, Rumors. The album earned the band a Grammy Award, generated multiple top ten singles, and, by 2003, was the second biggest selling album of all time with 40 million copies sold worldwide.

Fleetwood Mac was like a real life soap opera and people couldn’t look away.

Divorce, breakups, and addiction plagued many members of the band as they recorded Rumors. The incredible emotional turmoil felt through the album, accompanied by catchy choruses and cryptic lyrics, resonated with a massive audience in an unprecedented way. Fleetwood Mac was like a real life soap opera and people couldn’t look away.

The video shows a small part of that excitement, opening on a stadium full of people cheering over the opening. A young, dead eyed Nicks, blonde hair bigger than she is, sings to her adoring fans. It was so clearly produced in the late 70s–from the fade transitions to the crushed velvet caps.

“Gold Dust Woman” is largely considered to be a drug song. When asked about the meaning of “Gold Dust Woman” by Courtney Love for Spin in 1997, Nicks said:

“You know what, Courtney? I don’t really know what “Gold Dust Woman” is about. I know there was cocaine there and that I fancied it gold dust, somehow. I’m going to have to go back to my journals and see if I can pull something out about “Gold Dust Woman”. Because I don’t really know. It’s weird that I’m not quite sure. It can’t be all about cocaine.”

Actually, Stevie, it might be all about cocaine.
